Ten Years after The Matrix and we have Legos

E-mail Print PDF

I have a particular geeky friend. What makes him a bit geekier than most is that he is in his early thirties and has on hell of a lego collection. He gets so excited over his collection that I would have to call his dedication to the endless assortment of cellulose acetate blocks a way of life.

It was no surprise when I saw his latest email to me with the word 'Lego' in the title. The body of the email only contained the link to this video of the famous 'Trinity Help' bullet time scene from the first Matrix film. The folks at LegoMatrix produced the video for the ten year anniversary of The Matrix.

I have to confess that I am really impressed who well this roof top shoot out complete with the trails left through the air as they whiz perilously close to the Lego Neo. Amazing what somebody can do with 440 hours, a bunch of plastic bricks and handful of open source tools.

E-mail Print PDF

Zombie Survival EquationsWhile the jocks at any given school are busy farming testosterone, building the ultimate beer bongs and trying to get to second base with cheerleader girlfriends - geeks are busy are hard at work in numerous labs and libraries figuring out different ways to solve any and every potential problem with math. Give math geeks enough time, a slide rule, some imagination and they will solve any problem the universe can throw at us - including Zombies!

The braniacs at the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Carleton University have the killer equations that can potentially save all of living humanity from the Zombie Apocalypse. Here is the paper they published, 'WHEN ZOMBIES ATTACK!: MATHEMATICAL MODELLING OF AN OUTBREAK OF ZOMBIE INFECTION'.

Seriously, I am not making this up. I wish I was the one who came up with this stroke of genius.

V Reboot from ABC - more classic sci fi remakes to come?

E-mail Print PDF

This fall ABC will be broadcasting a modernized version of the sci-fi series 'V', that originally aired in 1984.

I have to wonder if this is that shape of sci-fi features and series that we can expect from Hollywood and the networks for the foreseeable future. Over the past couple years, movie goers and TV watchers have been flooded with more retreaded franchises than you can shake a light sabre at.

I guess it's the easy route for writers and producers to take. Just pull something out of the archives from twenty-ish years ago, re-work the scripts by changing the gender of a few key characters, amp up the violence a bit, inject some contemporary socially relevant themes and wrap it up in the gloss package of all the CGI goodness that was not available when it first aired. Presto! A new movie / mini series that people will watch because the euphoric recall of how cool they remember the original being.

With the wild success and praise of Battlestar Galactica, I guess it was only a matter of time before the other networks started poking around their storage closets for something they can give a make over to.

If the current trend continues Hollywood has a pool of about 190 different sci-fi projects from the 80s it can siphon from over the next decade.

The 2009 Perseid Meteor Shower

E-mail Print PDF

If it is now night outside where you are and you are inside reading this - then get the outside and look up! Instead of getting self absorbed on myspace lying to your online friends about how cool you are, you could be watching up to eighty meteors an hour.

This week is the annual visit of the Perseid Meteor Shower and the peak time to watch it will be Tuesday and Wednesday nights (Aug. 11 - 12).

If you live in a rural area with a minimal amount of light pollution from city lights, then you will be getting a much better show than us city slickers. Just lay down on the lawn or open field that gives you the widest expanse of sky to observe and enjoy the show.

The video clip (above) was shot and uploaded to Youtube last night.

Oxy acetylene vortex cannon strong to blow a womans clothes off

E-mail Print PDF

I spent my fair share around metal shops when I was in school. A lot can be learned when you are surrounded by high voltage, explosive gases, molten metal and tools powerful enough to cut and deform steel plates

Every semester we had projects we are graded on. Every semester I submitted designs for a compressed gas cannon or a trebuchet and every semester I was told to build something practical instead - like a barbecue pits or a tool boxes. I graduated high school with a pile of tool boxes, barbecue pits and storage shelves.

The man in the video clip above obviously had instructors who were happy to encourage his desire to tinker and experiment with controlled explosive forces and physics.

Looking back on it now, I should have submitted designs for a oxy-acetylene powered speakers?
