The braniacs at the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Carleton University have the killer equations that can potentially save all of living humanity from the Zombie Apocalypse. Here is the paper they published, 'WHEN ZOMBIES ATTACK!: MATHEMATICAL MODELLING OF AN OUTBREAK OF ZOMBIE INFECTION'. Seriously, I am not making this up. I wish I was the one who came up with this stroke of genius. Their mathematical model takes the assumption of three basic factors: Susceptible (living humans that can be infected), Zombies (self explanatory), and Removed (dead humans and zombies that have been defeated).Basically at the beginning of an zombie infection/outbreak - the largest factor is the Susceptibles with with Zombies and Removed being in the minority. Over a given length of time, the weight in each factor can shift dependent upon other factors. The publication does a pretty good job at explaining all the details for those who have the gray matter geared for trudging through it. For those who were jocks in school or who's math skills are a little too rusty to use this uber geek solution when zombies invade your neighborhood (and it will happen), then you can always use a more direct method of keeping the ravenous animated dead off your lawn.
