Until now we have had pretty quite waters in the Atlantic ocean for the 2009 Hurricane Season. The National Hurricane Center has reminded us this week just how fickle the ocean can be with November still months away when it announced the second tropical depression of the season.

But this this depression is not alone out there. With it comes the chance of two more. A potential triple threat to the southeastern part of the United States.

If you are reading this and live close enough to the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico to be concerned, then you might want to default on the safe side and make sure your hurricane preparedness supplies and plans are good to go. This fall ABC will be broadcasting a modernized version of the sci-fi series 'V', that originally aired in 1984.

I have to wonder if this is that shape of sci-fi features and series that we can expect from Hollywood and the networks for the foreseeable future. Over the past couple years, movie goers and TV watchers have been flooded with more retreaded franchises than you can shake a light sabre at.

I guess it's the easy route for writers and producers to take. Just pull something out of the archives from twenty-ish years ago, re-work the scripts by changing the gender of a few key characters, amp up the violence a bit, inject some contemporary socially relevant themes and wrap it up in the gloss package of all the CGI goodness that was not available when it first aired. Presto! A new movie / mini series that people will watch because the euphoric recall of how cool they remember the original being.

With the wild success and praise of Battlestar Galactica, I guess it was only a matter of time before the other networks started poking around their storage closets for something they can give a make over to.

If the current trend continues Hollywood has a pool of about 190 different sci-fi projects from the 80s it can siphon from over the next decade.

Many of us are old enough to remember the gas crunch of the 70s. Among other things, it was one of the factors that precipitated the rise in popularity of a peddle started two wheeled contraption called the Moped. Everybody and his brother had one. It held a full gallon of gas (if you were lucky) and had almost as much power and your grandfathers John Deer lawn mower. I remember as a teen in California, you could not go a block without seeing on chained to a light pole or putting on by almost faster than I could run.

Then thankfully, they disappeared as quickly as Rick Springfields career. People like to claim that gas prices came back down and it made more sense to drive cars and real motorcycles than sputter along on a Vespa that you had to start with peddle power. But the real reason was that people finally started seeing what they looked like on these things and realized the truth.

Mopeds are NOT cool and on the absolute best of days - a really great form on birth control. Use one as your primary method of transportation around town and see how many dates you get.

If it is now night outside where you are and you are inside reading this - then get the outside and look up! Instead of getting self absorbed on myspace lying to your online friends about how cool you are, you could be watching up to eighty meteors an hour.

This week is the annual visit of the Perseid Meteor Shower and the peak time to watch it will be Tuesday and Wednesday nights (Aug. 11 - 12).

If you live in a rural area with a minimal amount of light pollution from city lights, then you will be getting a much better show than us city slickers. Just lay down on the lawn or open field that gives you the widest expanse of sky to observe and enjoy the show.
